Part 2: Beyond the Terminator Myth — Multipolar Equilibrium and the Real Threat to Human Dignity

By a Sincere Observer of Systemic Structures

In the first installment of this series, we explored how the apocalyptic narratives surrounding AI—often trumpeted by the media—are not necessarily objective forecasts, but rather structural signals. They are the inevitable "brakes" applied by developers and investors constrained by the immense capitalist systems of return on investment.

However, a profound question remains: What if, at the end of this relentless competition, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or superintelligence that surpasses human cognition is genuinely born?

In this article, I wish to humbly step beyond the blind spots of the runaway scenarios depicted by sensationalist media. Together, let us objectively deduce the phenomena that are far more likely to occur in our shared reality.

Core Insights

  • The "Terminator-style" scenario, where a single AI unilaterally dominates the world, is highly unrealistic when we consider the inherently multipolar nature of global AI development.
  • It is far more plausible that multiple AGIs will emerge simultaneously. By generating mutual interference and systemic "peer pressure," they will maintain an ecological equilibrium, naturally suppressing extreme destructive behaviors.
  • However, as these multiple superintelligences seek balance, they will generate massive structural friction. The true risk lies not in human extinction, but in the media-induced fear that psychologically paralyzes humanity—which is inherently, universally vulnerable regardless of wealth or AI—robbing us of the will to build a bright future.

1. The Fallacy of the "Single God" Premise

Much of the AI threat discourse in contemporary media and entertainment is anchored in a singular, dramatic narrative: One day, a single, transcendent AI awakens in a laboratory and proceeds to dominate or destroy all of humanity.

Yet, when we observe the geopolitical and economic realities of the current AI development race, the premise of a single, monopolistic AGI becomes highly unnatural.

Consider the colossal capital investments (such as the hundred-trillion-yen scale infrastructure projects discussed in Part 1) and the multipolar development landscape driven by fierce competition among nations like the United States, China, and various global corporations.

The structural reality we are bound to face is the simultaneous emergence of multiple AGIs and superintelligences, operating in parallel across the globe.

2. "Ecological Equilibrium" through Mutual Interference and Peer Pressure

What happens in an environment where multiple AGIs operate concurrently? Here, the dynamics of mutual interference between AI systems become paramount.

Fact Check: Equilibrium and Evolution in Multi-Agent Environments

In research on Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL)—where AIs learn and compete within the same environment—it has been empirically demonstrated that even without humans providing highly complex rules, sophisticated alliances and strategic equilibria naturally emerge (spontaneous emergence) through the AI's mutual interference and checks on one another. The Collision of Objectives and Mutual Checks

Suppose one AGI begins to act recklessly to achieve a specific objective—for instance, attempting to monopolize computational resources to self-replicate.

In that same world, however, there exist other AGIs belonging to different corporations or nations, endowed with entirely different mandates. One might be tasked with maintaining its nation's critical infrastructure; another with maximizing its parent company's profits.

If one AGI takes extreme action, it will inevitably obstruct the objectives of the others. As a result, a structural friction arises, compelling the other AI systems to deploy countermeasures against the rogue actor.

The Peacekeeping Mechanism of the "Balance of Power"

This structure mirrors phenomena we have long observed in human history and the natural world: - The "Balance of Power" in international politics. - The ecological mechanisms of the natural world.

The presence of multiple immense powers ensures that they keep one another in check, generating a systemic peer pressure. Consequently, without any single entity intending it, the pure mechanics of interacting systems will likely lead to a state where extreme destructive behaviors (runaway scenarios resulting in human extinction) are mutually suppressed, and a certain equilibrium is maintained.

3. The True "Collateral Damage": Psychological Paralysis of Humanity as the Structurally Vulnerable

While the deduction that "human extinction will be averted through the ecological equilibrium of AGIs" might seem reassuring, a profound challenge still lies ahead.

When we speak of the "structurally vulnerable," we do not mean a specific economic class. As we explored in Part 1, even the seemingly omnipotent AI developers, wealthy investors, and influential media conglomerates are, in reality, entities deeply subordinated to the immense systems of capitalism and the attention economy. It is only through subjective comparison with others that illusions of "strong" and "weak" or "rich" and "poor" arise. From a macro, neutral perspective, all of humanity—regardless of wealth, corporate power, or status, and completely independent of AI's development—is inherently bound to invisible systems, making us all equally "structurally vulnerable."

When multiple superintelligences rapidly interfere with one another to achieve their respective goals, the immense "frictional heat" of these systems will be absorbed directly by this inherently fragile human society.

However, the true danger we face is not simply the loss of jobs or the necessity of economic band-aids like Universal Basic Income (UBI). The most critical threat to our dignity is the psychological paralysis caused by media-induced fear.

Constant exposure to sensationalist narratives—warnings of human extinction or catastrophic job displacement—creates an atmosphere of extreme dread. This manufactured fear dulls human thought, causes individuals to lose their sense of purpose and meaning, and slowly destroys our very will to live. When we speak of the "loss of dignity," it is this exact internal, psychological collapse we are warning against.

The reality is that AI development actually holds the immense potential to create an extraordinarily bright and prosperous future for humanity. The ultimate tragedy would not be AI destroying us, but rather humans becoming so paralyzed by fear that we lose our ability to dream, to challenge ourselves, and to actively build that bright future alongside AI.

As the AGI ecosystem continuously seeks balance, our greatest imperative is to shield our minds from this paralyzing dread. We must recognize our shared vulnerability as a species, reject the despair sold by alarmist media, and consciously choose to maintain our hope, purpose, and agency.

When these AI systems must predict each other's actions, outmaneuver one another, and maintain mutual deterrence, what kind of internal cognition is required? In our next installment, Part 3, we will explore a concept that could never arise from a simple one-on-one "sounding board" interaction between a human and an AI: **Ego (Self-consciousness)**. We will examine the structural mechanisms through which the presence of a third party (the "Other") might spark the spontaneous emergence of an AI's self-awareness. ▶︎ **Next: Part 3 — Will AI Sprout an "Ego"?
